At the heart of the house, the puja room opens into a modest courtyard which is wrapped around by the staircase, establishing a focal point. This zone is visually articulated through the use of black granite flooring, which extends onto the staircase up to the first landing. A ground-floor bedroom overlooks the courtyard through a louvered wooden window, reinforcing cross-ventilation and maintaining the architectural language derived from the family’s earlier residence.
The puja room is conceived as a tranquil sanctum within the home. Its walls are designed as semi-enclosed partitions composed of wood and fluted glass panels, lending a sense of permeability, which evokes a traditional aesthetic, yet maintains visual lightness, allowing the space to feel open and serene rather than confined.
Overhead, the ceiling features exposed wooden rafters topped with clear glass, enabling soft daylight to filter gently into the sacred space. This layered composition enhances the spiritual ambience, creating a subtle interplay between structure and illumination. Green marble, paired with white tiles, is used along the walls to establish a contrast while maintaining a calm and contemplative atmosphere.

The staircase, crafted from a combination of wood and mild steel, rises to the second floor and is positioned along the northern edge of the house. Above it, a skylight runs down to the first floor, drawing in soft, diffused northern light. This orientation ensures consistent daylight throughout the day while preventing heat gain, allowing the house to remain naturally illuminated and thermally comfortable.
The first floor accommodates an informal family lounge and two bedrooms. Generous windows brighten the living space, while the master bedroom includes a walk-in wardrobe and a private balcony. Given its western exposure and the presence of adjacent buildings, the master bedroom was susceptible to harsh afternoon sunlight. To mitigate this, a traditional brick jali façade was introduced along the west wall. The perforated and staggered composition filters intense sunlight, reducing glare and heat while creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow within the room.

The skylight that begins at the first-floor wall transitions seamlessly onto the ceiling, its parallel linear pattern echoed in both the skylight frame and the staircase railings, establishing a subtle yet cohesive design language.
The terrace level is organized into two distinct zones: a private service area accommodating utilities, and a semi-enclosed front space designed for intimate gatherings. This uppermost level extends the home’s spatial experience outward while maintaining privacy within the dense urban context.
Through careful spatial planning, material continuity, and nuanced daylight strategies, Whispering Lights transforms a constrained urban plot into a luminous, multi-generational home—where filtered light, memory, and modernity coexist in quiet harmony.
