This is a farm house built on a piece of land placed out of a farm land located on outskirts of Bangalore. The farm land with rich flora and fauna is featured by sloping terrain on one side and a hillock on the other side creating a valley in between with flowing water stream. The site for the farm house is located on an elevated area of the farm land to get an unhindered view of the valley and the hillock.

The client’s proposal for farm house was to create a place for week end breakout and occasional family get-togethers. Client desired to build a farm house that depict a South Indian Mangalore tile roof rural house with earthy and rustic feel. And also the context of the site with natural setting around is the key factor in shaping the house with exposed earthy walls constructed in readily available Compressed stabilized earth blocks followed by Mangalore tile sloping roof, Red oxide/ Kadapa stone flooring, exposed concrete ceiling, polished Mahogany wood doors and windows, Sadarhalli granite stone and steel structural columns.

The design is restricted by the geometric principals of the Mangalore tile roof and load bearing method of construction. The plan is rectangular in shape with North facing low profile main entrance, is greeted by centrally placed open to sky courtyard with Entrance Foyer, Living, Dining and semi-private family areas placed around and private areas placed looking outward. The living area is extended in to semi covered verandas leading to a panoramic view of the hillock and the valley on the East and North sides of the site.

In response to the climate, East and North side-built form of the house are restricted to one floor height.  South and West sides-built form of the house maintained as two floor height creating shade for the North and Eastern parts of the house during the summer late afternoons. One walks through the skylight lit metal staircase and a double height volume to reach first floor.

First floor is designed more as a semi covered space with private spaces on the North and South sides opening up the floor to surrounding views on other two sides making an ideal multipurpose spill over space for the private spaces.
