The client’s brief was clear and concise: they desired a home that was both aesthetically pleasing and functionally efficient; unique but not overly extravagant. It is rare to encounter clients who are truly unreserved and open to new ideas and material explorations. As established professionals, they placed their trust in their expertise, guided us primarily by their lifestyle, utility and functional needs. The 3BHK apartment on the 17th floor in Surat was intended as a second home for the client’s parents, who live out of town, and for occasional use by the clients themselves. According to their requirements, it consists of two master bedrooms, a children's bedroom with a study unit, provision of a dedicated worship space, a breakfast counter, and visual privacy between the kitchen and living room. This formed the foundation of their design approach.

The client’s uninhibited mind-set provided ample creative freedom, and at the same time a challenge to temper their impulses and ensure that they not go overboard. They visualised the home that reflected warm soothing tones and textures, with a blend of carefully curated materials. They crafted a material palette consisting primarily of terrazzo, brass, lime concrete, black powder coated mild steel, Stonelam and teak wood finishes striking a balance between innovation, functionality, and a distinct, understated charm. Custom terrazzo panels provide visual texture throughout the space, while ceiling concrete textures add depth; brass inlays add in a touch of richness while black mild steel elements introduce sleekness and elegance. The Stonelam and teak wood finishes harmonize the materials, infusing the home with a warm and inviting atmosphere. The headboard textiles add in an earthy pop of colour while the curtain fabrics keep the space light and airy.

Since the apartment was already finished with developer specs, they chose not to make any significant spatial modifications. Unwilling to replace the existing Italian marble flooring considering the fiscal aspects, they opted to use terrazzo in unconventional ways, rather than its traditional application as a flooring material. They customized precast terrazzo panels featuring yellow, white, and black stone chips for use on walls, beds, wardrobes, and other furniture pieces. Inlayed with brass accents, these panels set the tone of the design language of the entire apartment, right from the entrance door. Once inside, the custom designed terrazzo dining table in shades of grey, along with the metallic finished puja space, stand out as the focal points in the setting.

The client desired an indian seating in the living room along with sofa seating. This has been incorporated against the backdrop of a meticulously designed metal and wood kitchen screen which acts as an interesting conversation starter. The living room also showcases a rug from Jaipur Rugs used as a wall art, custom designed in bright earthy tones, integrated with veneer sheathing on the wall. As they move further, the bedrooms and passage area are an extension of the overarching theme of the house, complemented by distinct design elements like pivoted screens in sandwiched fabric glass, bespoke bedside units and metal art, a collapsible study table, a foldable ironing table and carefully curated art pieces. Each element has its own identity yet together they weave a cohesive design language.
