Tweening, derived from "in-betweening," is a concept often associated with animation and digital design, referring to the creation of intermediate frames that transition between two key states. In architectural design, particularly facades, tweening involves the mathematical and geometric interpolation between different design elements, enabling smooth, fluid transformations across a structure. This method, rooted in complex geometric algorithms like linear interpolation and spline-based methods, calculates gradual changes in position, scale, or rotation between forms. The result is a dynamic facade that appears to morph as the viewer's perspective shifts, turning the facade into a living, evolving surface rather than a static element.

rat[LAB] Studio recently unveiled an iconic parametric facade for Head Field, a global recruitment company, at their new headquarters in Noida, Delhi NCR. This project sets a new standard in modern facade design by incorporating advanced parametric elements to create a visually striking and functionally dynamic building. The centerpiece of this facade is the “Tweening Arches” design, which features arches and curves that converge and diverge at either end, creating a visually captivating effect.

rat[LAB] Studio, known for its cutting-edge facade designs, has meticulously designed, value-engineered, and executed this unique parametric metal facade to uplift the new HQ of Head Field. Located in the rapidly expanding urban landscape of Noida, this building sets a benchmark in modern facade design. The design integrates vertical fins that form intriguing arches, dynamically responding to the surrounding environment and reinforcing the brand’s identity.

The primary goal was to create a unique and iconic presence, a vision shared by both the client and rat[LAB] Studio. Initially, the building featured a simple exterior with four cutouts for natural light. However, the industrial surroundings presented an opportunity to craft a distinctive facade that would embody the project's and the brand’s identity. Inspired by the concept of integrating arches and curves within the building, these elements were incorporated into the facade, establishing a cohesive design language that unifies both the interior and exterior.

The design also addresses environmental considerations, particularly the harsh radiation from the southwest-facing orientation, ensuring that the facade remains both functional and visually striking. This approach not only reflects and strengthens the brand’s identity but also elevates the building to a global icon, demonstrating the power of thoughtful design.

The parametric facade is a fusion of innovation and aesthetics, featuring vertical fins that intertwine to form captivating arches. Each fin is crafted to respond to environmental changes, adapting to light and weather conditions. The arches create an enchanting play of light and shadow, casting a mesmerizing spectacle on the building's exterior.

Beyond its aesthetic allure, this design offers unmatched energy efficiency. The facade, with its vertical fins, sets a new standard for contemporary architecture by blending creativity, functionality, and environmental consciousness. The exterior is adorned with ACP (aluminium composite panels) and mild steel tubes bent to create a tweening effect, crafting an inspiring workspace that promotes productivity while elevating the aesthetics of modern architecture.

A facade that flows with artistic precision

The design of the Head Field office unveils the future of office architecture with its revolutionary parametric facade. By blending vertical fins into arches, this captivating design adapts to its surroundings, showcasing innovation and elegance. The facade’s design reflects the brand’s identity through cutting-edge parametric techniques and the careful integration of organic arches, symbolizing a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and modernity. The facade positions the building as a landmark, reinforcing the brand’s presence on a global scale.

The success of this project hinged on the meticulous selection of materials and construction techniques. Lightweight aluminium composite panels (ACP) provided a perfect balance between form and function. The vertical fins within the arches curve elegantly, enhancing the facade's modern aesthetic. The exterior combines materials strikingly, featuring ACP panels with a stone beige metallic finish that complements sleek grey wall paint. The facade includes a single-glazed charcoal grey glazing system for a corporate identity, followed by a metal second skin that mitigates harsh sunlight and heat. This blend of materials elevates the building, highlighting its architectural excellence and contemporary significance, making it a landmark in its urban setting.

Mild steel frames offer practical benefits, such as ease of installation, durability, and low maintenance. The parametric design approach enabled precise fabrication and assembly, ensuring seamless integration of components for a cohesive and visually appealing facade. The construction process involved step-by-step execution, starting with the mild steel framing of the fins, followed by the cladding of the ACP panels and the integration of lighting elements. rat[LAB] Studio innovatively used façade profiles to incorporate concealed strip lighting, enhancing the visual impact and accentuating the geometry at night.

This project posed multiple construction and cost-controlling challenges, which were effectively addressed through a seamless construction process. The mild steel tubes used to create seamlessly bending curves were essential for the dynamic lighting modes embedded within the facade. A parametric design process ensured consistency across the arches and fins, ensuring uniformity and precision. Additionally, 3D-printed models were used for value engineering, optimizing joints and fixtures for aesthetics and functionality. This methodical approach resulted in a facade that meets technical requirements while enhancing the building's architectural expression.
