Situated in Yelahanka, Bangalore, the client envisioned a residence that radiates the calm and quietude of their ancestral home. Named “a Home of Sunrise and Prosperity” in Sanskrit, the architecture is ritual-inspired, with corridors, courtyards, and voids orchestrated to frame moments of reflection, celebration, and togetherness.

The architectural language draws from traditional South Indian principles while addressing contemporary living aspirations. Sustainability is embedded in spatial planning, informed by vernacular strategies. Natural light floods shared areas, reducing reliance on artificial lighting while creating a dynamic interplay of shadows and highlights that animate interiors.

Materiality reinforces the home’s sanctum-like quality. The corten steel jaali façade, a poetic abstraction of the surrounding trees, mediates privacy without severing connection, fostering a constant dialogue between interior and exterior and grounding the residence in its landscape.

The design is anchored around the pooja, the spiritual core of the house and the primary organizing element of the plan. A central corridor defines circulation, linking zones across levels, with a staircase providing vertical connection. The journey begins at the entrance foyer, where a striking wooden partition introduces drama, leading into an elongated corridor with a finely detailed wooden ceiling that guides movement through the home.

The central court mediates between public and private areas, functioning as a double-height atrium. In private zones, light is carefully modulated to preserve comfort, privacy, and restfulness, with skylights, light wells, and strategically placed openings orchestrating this balance.

Materials prioritize durability, adaptability, and sustainability. Responsibly sourced wood adds warmth, marble and local black stone offer longevity, brass detailing refines, and lime plaster provides a breathable finish. The corten steel façade ages gracefully, while reclaimed and recyclable materials reinforce resilience. Neutral grey marble floors unify the interiors, providing a serene backdrop for light and crafted elements.

We envisioned a home that is timeless, serene, and deeply rooted in tradition, where exteriors and interiors coexist to enhance wellbeing.

The façade acts as a porous membrane, blurring the boundary between inside and outside. Shared spaces, including the living and dining areas, open onto gardens, skylit courts, and light shafts that animate the house throughout the day. The design nurtures a sanctuary for the family, offering spaces that are intimate yet expansive enough for social gatherings, festivals, and celebrations. Bedrooms are deliberately restrained, cocooned from excess light to ensure privacy and rest, striking a balance between openness and seclusion.

Sustainability informs both material choice and spatial design. Skylights reduce reliance on artificial lighting, cross ventilation keeps interiors naturally cool, and metal screens temper heat gain while filtering light. Waterbodies and greenery enhance microclimate and air quality, fostering a lifestyle that is environmentally conscious and attuned to nature’s rhythms.
