Ar. Darshit Tejani and Ar. Bhakti Tejani of Pramāna Design have designed this 1700 sq.ft. home in Vile Parle, Mumbai for a family of four who wanted their home to be a physical extension of their personalities. The most exciting part of the brief was that no two rooms should be same, yet the entire home should have elements tying the spaces together.

With this challenge in mind, each space has been crafted to resonate with their persona individually and collectively. Each room has been assigned with a pop of colour to highlight the character of the user and to balance it, a common neutral shade stays constant through the entire home to unify the spaces into one common experience.

As one enters the home, they are greeted by the custom white rose mural on the wall in the background and the circular dining table at the front with a glimpse of the living room in the back. The doors to all the rooms are hidden into the grey panelling which envelopes the space. The micro-concrete flooring, wall panelling, and walls are done in different tones of grey to serve as the perfect backdrop for the curved sofas and circular center table.

In an ocean of greys and whites, the rotating swing - Fireball, is the ship which breaks the monochrome to add a red tone to the space. The white ceiling is undulating to house direct and indirect lights and conceal structural members.

The Master bedroom is the biggest among all the bedrooms. To highlight this scale and celebrate it, the boat shaped king size bed has been kept in the centre of the room. Behind the bed towards the window there are two swivel chairs and a small table to create the perfect nook for unwinding over mesmerizing views of the Pawan Hans Airstrip with the Arabian Sea in the backdrop.

The most striking feature in the room is the bookshelf which has been carved out of the wall and acts as a hidden door between the bedroom and the walk-in wardrobe. The ceiling is curved in a cloud like form near the entrance of the room to create a niche for an indirect light.

As one enters the walk-in wardrobe, the first thing they see is the ceiling. The clients’ mother used to embroider small patches of fabric which she wanted to incorporate as a memory in the home. Hence, these patches have been turned in to a ceiling fresco by taking inspiration from the renaissance era cathedrals. To elevate the focus to wards the ceiling, the wardrobes and study are in a neutral tone. The mirrors on either sides of the bathroom door reflect the ceiling to reveal details of the embroidery work. For the wardrobes, custom knobs have been designed and made on-site out of Sandstone and Teakwood.

As one enters the son’s bedroom, they pass through a passage which has been designed as a portal with indigo stained walls and ceiling, with the wardrobe on one side to almost teleport the visitor into his world.

To resonate with his vibe, two different shades of Indigo (light and dark) have been used in combination with teak wood to bring out the warmth and create a pleasing play of colors. The wall above the headboard is backlit with square pattern resembling the galaxy which is in continuity from the pattern on the wardrobe in the passage. The wardrobes and console have custom teakwood knobs made on site.

The light grey microtopped flooring runs throughout the rooms tying the spaces together and providing the right amount of color balance required for each room. The ceiling language is also simple and is planned to conceal services and structural members and also follows a uniform color throughout the home.
