The Gulmohar Park Residence is a 1500 square feet apartment designed by The Storey Tellers Design Studio to represent sophisticated modern living. The clients, a young working couple with two kids, wanted a home that clearly echoed their lifestyle: an open, uncluttered space that makes room for meaningful interactions. Says Komal Rustagi, Principal Designer at the studio, “The couple we worked with has a really calm and composed disposition, and we tried to create a home that embodies the same spirit.” In an attempt to bring out the clients’ distinct individuality, a modern aesthetic is carried throughout the house, realised through lively tones of pastel blues and blush pinks.

Enabling open interaction was a core design principle for this home, and realised in a way that connects the common spaces through to the bedrooms, yet maintains privacy. The living area has been designed to maximise the use of space, while keeping it vibrant yet airy using cool shades of blue and whites. An integrated bar and media unit occupies the length of the front wall, installed opposite the sectional sofa.

“To create space for better interaction, we opened up the kitchen and placed it at the heart of the house—both literally and figuratively,” the interior designer says. The kitchen is directly connected to and accessible from the living and dining areas, which comes in handy with both everyday use and while entertaining guests. It is finished in earthy textures to break away from the bright and bold look of the rest of the space. The high counter that connects the kitchen with the dining area was initially a wall that was the very first thing that came into view on stepping inside the home. It was knocked down to a much more humane scale, allowing for greater interaction between the spaces—and thus the occupants. This was also strategically done to let in much more natural light into the previously dark kitchen.

Though the entire design scheme is unified by bright but muted hues, each space reflects a distinctive mood with the help of its unique material and colour palette. The bedrooms are crafted for a tranquil, subtly tropical feel, which lays the basis for the finished look. With the help of large windows, they frame peaceful views of nature outside. In the guest bedroom, this look is built on with the help of floral elements, beige-toned flooring and a blue wash over the walls and cool greys to lend it a relaxed seaside vibe. “The bedrooms are bright and welcoming, yet at the same time quite soothing—creating a calming atmosphere reminiscent of the family’s holidays,” explains Komal.

For Komal, however, the most exciting part of the design of this home was the kids’ room. Taking a ‘kids-first’ approach, the design focuses on interweaving learning in everyday experiences. A floor-to-ceiling chalkboard panel next to the bed acts as a creative canvas, while multiple play zones are spread throughout the space. She elaborates, “The highlight of course was conceiving spaces for the clients’ two adorable kids! We made sure that the bunk bed for the children was not just a sleeping space, but an integrated fun zone, incorporating the kids’ favourite colours and playtime activities coupled with plenty of storage space.” The two-toned bunk bed is finished in light burl veneer, inspired by the travel-themed wallpaper on the wall behind the bed.

The range of furniture in the home has been customised by the studio, designed and built in-house to fit specifically to the spatial configuration. The materials, upholstery and other elements of the space are carefully employed along with the bespoke furnishings so as to create a seamless, cohesive flow of space and experience.

“Giving life to this home came to us naturally, and that was made possible by the crystal clear vision the family had for how they wanted their space to look like. It was an easy process with the understanding we built with them, who were at the same time supportive and open to creative inputs. This helped it become a truly collaborative effort that draws from everyone’s inputs,” concludes Rustagi.
