According to the bylaws it was mandate to leave 30 feet in the front edge, 20 feet at the rear edge (with 40% coverage on either side of this setback) and 10 feet side opening on the eastern edge of the property. To create maximum cross ventilation and possibility of good views and green spaces they decided to leave 5 feet on the western edge of the property thus opening the building from all the four sides.

The client’s love for nature and their desire to create a bold statement they took a bottom down approach wherein they attempted to change the front edge of the boundary wall by carving out a space from their plot and making an open plaza with a BUDDHA STATUE placed under a plumeria tree. This redefining of the plot boundaries broke the monotony created by straight jacketed entrances of adjoining plots and also gave a lot of emphasis on the pedestrian entry to the house.

This 7,500 sq. ft. residence in Meerut is an amalgamation of earthy tones with modern elements. For a small family of owner, their parents and two kids, they did two bedrooms on the ground floor for the senior people and designed two living spaces, one on the northern edge and one on the southern edge of the property. Southern edge of the property was done for the winters and the northern edge of the property was for summers. Winter edge or southern edge opens up into the front lawn and the summer edge opens up in the rear northeast lawn.

The entrance porch was carefully planned by using a large overhang supported on trusses in a triangular shape in a contrasting manner. The double-height entrance foyer sets the tone for the large scales that were made possible in limited physical space. The foyer leads to the staircase against large windows overlooking an internal courtyard. The open spaces in the courtyard are accentuated by overhanging greens. The spaces are furnished with a tasteful selection of furniture and patterned soft furnishings. The bedrooms are spread over two floors, and all have calm colors that are interspersed with accented elements and minimalistic moldings.

The parents’ bedroom and toilet are in lighter shades for a subtle and relaxed living. The son’s bedroom has a bright-colored theme to reflect the eclectic taste he had, and the adjoining toilet has a large skylight in the ceiling to add a play of light and shadows. The kitchen has a subtle appeal, with sparse white walls and laminates complemented by the beige countertop and flooring. The terrace overlooks a green belt, and a swimming pool was constructed on it, with its infinity edge acting as a horizon against the city skyline.

Every bedroom and living space had large openings with possible sliding doors enabling inhabitants to use outdoor spaces with minimal effort. These large openings also act as part of interiors by borrowing external views of landscape all around the building.
