Situated 15 km from Pondicherry along the serene coastal stretch, this four-bedroom beachside villa is envisioned as a contemporary home rooted in minimalism and Mediterranean sensibilities. The residence is conceived as a quiet retreat by the sea — where architecture, light, and landscape come together in harmony.

The name Lumora is derived from the word “lumen,” meaning light, and “ora,” meaning shore — together signifying “light by the shore.” The name captures the villa’s essence —Natural textures, muted tones, and curated material palettes which evoke a sense of calm and timelessness to the spaces.

The site is situated within a gated township that enjoys direct access to a pristine stretch of the Bay of Bengal beach. Lumora sits just a few blocks away from the shoreline, offering a sense of closeness to the sea while retaining privacy and tranquillity. The clients — a young doctor couple and their daughter — intended to have a home that would meet every aspect of their lifestyle. Having redefined their priorities after the pandemic, they sought a space that was entirely self-sufficient, comfortable, and adaptable to their daily needs.

The layout is meticulously organized with a clear functional zoning that separates private and public spaces. The ground floor plan is composed of a series of well-defined functional zones arranged around a central courtyard, fostering visual continuity and a fluid sense of movement throughout the house. The clients briefed us on having two living areas – formal with a dining space to house the guests and an informal living cum kitchen space for the family members. The formal living and dining rooms are centrally positioned, ensuring direct and easy access from the entrance as well as through the connected garage. The inclusion of a central courtyard on one side and substantial garden areas along the length of the building brings nature into the home and facilitates social interaction. The positioning of the courtyard allows natural light and ventilation to penetrate deep into the building thereby creating a serene visual anchor that enhances the sense of calm.

Bedrooms are placed strategically along the quieter edges of the layout to ensure privacy, while maintaining direct connections to the outdoors through landscaped sit-outs. The rear zone accommodates essential service spaces — the wet kitchen, pantry, laundry, and maid’s toilet — designed for smooth functionality without interrupting the privacy of the main living areas.

The formal Living and the Dining room embodies the home’s minimalist Mediterranean ethos through its warm, earthy palette. The interiors are defined by muted beige and off-white tones that create a soft backdrop for natural light to play across the space. The wood tile flooring and the furniture add warmth and texture, grounding the room in a sense of natural comfort. The formal dining space acts as a bridge between the courtyard and the swimming pool deck. The large opening ensures the dining space is flooded with natural light, reducing the need for artificial illumination during the day and creating a bright, airy atmosphere.

The Heart of the home - the informal space functions as a fluid living, dining and kitchen hub that prioritizes family interaction, casual entertaining, and a direct connection to the outdoors. The dining area utilizes large, full-height sliding glass doors that open onto a deck, which steps down to the swimming pool. This configuration transforms the interior into an extension of the leisure zone.

The first-floor layout is organized along the same linear axis, allowing each zone to benefit from natural light and ventilation that flow through large setbacks on the pool side and open-to-sky courtyards. The Master bedroom and the daughter’s bedroom enjoy the serene view of the pool side and is equipped with a private walk-in and ensuite bathroom.

The master bedroom exudes a warm and tranquil mood - featuring shades of terracotta, beige, and wood tones. The daughter’s bedroom is designed with a soft and refreshing colour palette of sage green, white, and muted pastels. A built-in bay window with integrated book storage doubles as a cozy reading corner, allowing ample daylight to pour in while offering a quiet retreat within the room. A balcony right next to the book lounge overlooks the pool and also gives the glimpse of the ocean on the east side. Designed to offer both quiet and togetherness, it serves as a personal space for reading as well as a comfortable area where the family can relax and spend time together.

As part of the requirement from the client, an independent bachelor’s pad with its own external staircase is thoughtfully integrated into the design, allowing it to serve as a rentable unit while maintaining the privacy of the main home. The colour palette is a blend of earthy neutrals and calming blues with a delightful pop of burnt orange colour creating a mood that is calm yet refreshing.

The home integrates solar panels on the terrace to harness clean energy, reducing dependence on conventional power sources. A well-designed rainwater harvesting system collects and reuses rainwater, helping conserve water. These sustainable features are thoughtfully built into the design, making Lumora both environmentally responsible and aesthetically refined.

The project balances the client’s requirements with a design deeply rooted in its context. Through a thoughtful play of colour, material, and texture, each space is given a distinct character while maintaining a cohesive narrative throughout. Natural light and ventilation have been carefully put together to enhance the spatial experience, creating interiors that are not only visually engaging but also comfortable and sustainable. The material choice, surface finish, and palette have been considered to reflect the surroundings and culture, resulting in a home that is both functional and poetic, where design and lifestyle seamlessly coexist.

Lumora embodies the essence of slow living — a coastal home defined by restraint, balance, and the beauty of natural light.
