The project is in a dense urban fabric in the town of Tirupur, Tamil Nadu (India). This textile town has witnessed a gradual increase in the economic conditions & as a result, driven by aspiration, the residential built forms are undergoing a rapid transformation. The clients, two brothers living with their families, wanted a home where each family could have their privacy and yet have the feeling of living together.

A narrow site measuring 20’ x 60’ faces North with the road on shorter side and abutted to other dwellings on the rest of the three sides. Hence the source of ventilation and light is restricted to the northern side and from the roof. Climatically this imposed a challenge. Tirupur is predominantly hot & dry all through the year with temperatures reaching 35 degree Celsius (95 F). The design process began with an exercise of programming volumes. The entire permissible built space was split into three horizontal and three vertical volumes.

Each horizontal spread accommodates one family, with the terrace serving as a common gathering space to relax and unwind. The vertical volume layers the house into the various spaces with increasing degrees of privacy as we go inwards into the building. The living rooms on both the floors are at the anterior end of the site overlooking the street. The bedrooms with baths & toilets are placed towards the posterior end.

Central open to sky court is the unifying volume bringing in enough light & ventilation. To ensure the movement of air, enough porosity is built above all the doors & windows with operable louvers. A walk through the dense chaotic suburb where the site is located, leaves anyone crave for a green lung space. But the lack of setbacks inside the site left us no opportunity to have garden space.  As part of the design, small pockets of landscape were created throughout the house creating a relaxing atmosphere.

The living & bedroom spaces overlook the court on both levels. The connecting bridge on the first-floor cuts through the double height volume of the court there by making the house visually connected and interactive, ensuring a sense of togetherness between the families.

The materiality of the house is kept minimal with White walls to reflect light and ensure expansiveness. A natural material palette comprising of Yellow Jaisalmer & Kota Stone for flooring combined with Hard Wood for doors & windows brings in an earthy tone and contrast creating a cheerful tropical setting.
