The client desired a home that fosters a deep connection to his roots, reflecting the essence of the environment where he grew up. His vision was for a sustainable, eco-friendly house that promotes a healthy living experience. Key priorities included minimizing electricity consumption, particularly by reducing reliance on air conditioning, and ensuring ample access to fresh, natural air throughout the space.

Basavangudi, one of Bangalore’s oldest settlements, inspired a design that thoughtfully revives the traditional charm of the area, blending heritage with modern sensibilities.

A statue of Basava graces the central courtyard, offering a warm welcome into the home. This retirement home incorporates bio climatic strategies to passively insulate the building, using shading techniques to block the harsh southern and western sun. A central courtyard brings a touch of tradition while enhancing passive ventilation. The material palette blends traditional elements with a minimalist aesthetic, creating a tranquil and timeless atmosphere. Thoughtfully designed openings allow for soft, diffused light, ensuring a serene and comfortable environment.

The striking geometry of the sloping Mangalore tile roofs takes center stage in the facade, where varying ridges and horizontal tile layers are complemented by exposed laterite masonry.

The flooring features a blend of Kota stone, with Atangudi tiles used for skirting and as highlighting details. The inside views are framed through arches and pillars, while the A-shaped truss work and intricate joinery add an aesthetic dimension to the roof.

Softly rounded corners of the walls throughout the design create a gentle atmosphere. The ground floor bedrooms feature fixed cots with a lohi finish, inspired by the aesthetic of the 'Jagathis' found in Hoysala temples, adding a touch of tradition to the space.

The horizontal lines extend throughout the interior, from the Atangudi borders, exposed laterite and adobe block masonry to the ceiling planks, creating a harmonious flow across the space.

Traditional elements, such as the Chowkabara layout, are intricately engraved into the flooring of the sit-outs, designed for the leisurely pace of retirement life. The ground-floor sit-out and first-floor balcony seamlessly connect with the east-facing garden, inviting moments of reflection. The spacious balcony, with its more traditional design, feels like a serene, enclosed terrace. The entire home is oriented away from the bustling street, opening up to a tranquil garden creating a peaceful oasis amidst the chaos of the urban landscape.
