Swasti – A home for Queen

Conceived as a home for Roopasri and her children, this project explores domesticity through a lens of strength, introspection, and aspiration. Designed for a single mother seeking both expansiveness and intimacy, the house negotiates a careful balance between openness and enclosure, monumentality and warmth, while remaining closely connected to nature.

Situated on a nearly square plot of 355 square meters, the building is placed diagonally to generate a series of landscaped pockets along its edges. This move transforms residual spaces into active gardens. Two existing trees anchor the site. One, an African Tulip tree, is celebrated as a focal point, while the other is retained as a quieter, contemplative presence outside a juliet balcony.

The planning follows a clear spatial hierarchy. The ground floor is organized into public, semi-private, and private zones, ensuring fluid transitions and layered privacy. The first floor accommodates three bedrooms connected by a shared lounge and a library workspace. Above, a studio extends the home into a space for creative practice, reflecting the client’s identity as a dancer.

Materially, the house is rooted in economy and craft. Table-mould bricks laid in rat-trap bond reduce material consumption while improving thermal performance. Painted Exposed RCC slabs and arch panel roofs introduce variation in light and form and help reduce the material cost, while the overall language remains restrained and modern.

Climatically responsive, the design incorporates skylights and controlled openings to modulate light and ventilation. Sustainable systems like rainwater harvesting, solar energy, composting, and food cultivation are seamlessly integrated, positioning the house as a self-sufficient and grounded living environment.
