"What the teacher is, is more important than what he teaches." – Karl Menninger

As Architects, they are supposed to justify the right of a client - teacher couple, to have designated space for their self nourishment - mentally, psychologically and emotionally so that their wellness is supposed to light up the lives of countless students/ future generations. For the architecture of a residence owned by a teacher couple, the house would need to reflect the teacher’s values: practicality, learning, hobbies, creativity, and calm. The psychology of a teacher is a complex and deeply human blend of cognitive, emotional, and social processes shaped by their role in nurturing others. Teachers are not just deliverers of knowledge-they are motivators, guides, mentors, and emotional anchors in the classroom/society. The psychology of a teacher is grounded in caring, cognition, and commitment. A teacher’s mental and emotional world is shaped by a passion for helping others learn, and the daily psychological work they do is both deeply demanding and profoundly meaningful.

Design philosophy and approach for a residence which will be used by the owner Mr. Sathees Eramala, a High school teacher and his wife Ms Bharathi Sathees, an UG Professor for Philosophy and their student child who is in 10th grade- Master Goutham.

The teacher’s home is envisioned as a space that prioritizes function over flamboyance, embodying simplicity while carrying thoughtful meaning. Drawing inspiration from both learning and nature, the design emphasizes openness, natural light, and environments that nurture intellectual engagement. With a budget-conscious approach, the home employs sustainable, durable, and affordable materials, while subtle personal touches add warmth and character to the overall living experience.

The exterior of the residence reflects a thoughtful balance between modesty and functionality, designed as a two-storey home with three bedrooms efficiently accommodated within an 8-cent plot. Prioritizing authenticity and warmth, the design employs natural materials such as brick, wood, and stone. A welcoming entryway enhances the sense of arrival, featuring a cozy front porch, a garden with benches, and a sit-out that encourages interaction with visitors. In keeping with principles of responsible living, the home also incorporates sustainable features including solar panels, a rainwater harvesting system, and native landscaping.

The living room, seamlessly connected to the sit-out, features a thoughtfully designed reading nook with comfortable seating and ample natural light, creating an inviting atmosphere for quiet moments of reflection. The sit-out itself serves as a versatile reading nook and transitional indoor-outdoor space, ideal for small group tutoring, book clubs, or planning sessions, while also functioning as a warm family gathering area on the ground floor. Both spaces are unified by a palette of calming earth tones and enhanced by large windows that fill the interiors with natural light, fostering an ambience that is both serene and inspiring.

The residence thoughtfully integrates spaces that balance functionality, comfort, and intellectual engagement. At its core lies a dedicated study nook, envisioned as the heart of the home, where bookshelves brim with both educational texts and personal favorites. A desk and chair provide a setting for lesson planning and grading, while a pin board or whiteboard displays inspiring quotes, schedules, and teaching materials.

The kitchen and dining area are designed to be simple, organized, and welcoming—an environment that supports both family meals and quiet dinners. Open planning ensures that the dining space seamlessly connects with the kitchen through a breakfast counter, encouraging conversations, quick meals, and casual gatherings. Books, ranging from cookbooks to educational volumes, find a place here as well, underscoring the home’s culture of learning.

The bedrooms are envisioned as private sanctuaries, free of clutter and work-related distractions, where minimalist décor enhances a sense of calm and repose. Bay windows in the bedrooms create cozy reading nooks, offering versatile space for keeping books and journals or serving as seating and even functional tables. Cross ventilation is carefully achieved in all three bedrooms, with the strategic placement of large and small windows on opposite walls, ensuring natural airflow and comfort throughout.

The home is designed to encourage both contemplation and learning through a series of carefully crafted spatial elements. At the stair mid-landing, a "Mini Library" is introduced—a wall lined with books, teaching materials, and journals—opening out to the internal courtyard and enriching the daily rhythm of the house. A dramatic "double-height wall", rising six meters, is animated with clay brick patterns that connect the ground and first floors, inviting moments of pause as natural sunlight filters in from the skylight above, with each brick carrying its own distinct character of tone and shade.

The planning further incorporates "three double-height volumes"—in the living room, dining space, and inner courtyard—each enhanced by skylights that render artificial lighting unnecessary during the day, while creating ever-changing moods from morning through evening. At the heart of the layout, the "inner courtyard" with its minimal pooja space and greenery opens onto a patio garden through a sliding window. Conceived as an outdoor learning and reading nook, this space allows for reading, writing, or informal tutoring, offering an environment where ideas can grow freely and the spirit of continuous learning is nurtured.

The architecture embodies the spirit of its teacher-owners, creating spaces that nurture, inspire reflection, encourage learning, and foster growth. More than just a residence, the house becomes a meaningful haven—offering not only a place to live and work but also a safe, welcoming, and empowering environment. It allows teachers to pursue their purpose with dignity, advance in their profession, and feel truly at home each day, while also providing room for creativity and experimentation to flourish.
