Designed as a serene weekend retreat, this farmhouse seamlessly blends with its natural surroundings, offering a tranquil escape for the family. Every aspect of the design was meticulously crafted to ensure harmony with the environment, prioritizing a constant connection to nature that enhances the sensory experience of the inhabitants. The rustling of leaf litter, the soothing sound of flowing water from the irrigation canal, and the shaded canopy of mature mango trees were key elements guiding the design process. Given the family's active social life, adaptable spaces were created to accommodate their guests comfortably.

The first step was identifying the perfect location for the farmhouse within the 18-acre coconut farm. While exploring, they discovered four mature mango trees surrounding a central irrigation culvert. These trees, planted by the client’s great-grandfather, held deep sentimental value for her. The tranquil sound of the flowing water further solidified this spot as the ideal setting for the home.

The entire structure was raised by a meter to align with the existing pump. The irrigation culvert was redesigned into three levels to amplify the sound of flowing water. At the second level, it extends into a natural swimming pool, which then flows through the farm. The combination of rustling leaves and flowing water creates a calming atmosphere for the residents.

The client, an avid collector of art and antiques, inspired them to design the interiors as a canvas for her collection. They incorporated a rustic backdrop to complement her treasures, drawing inspiration from vernacular craftsmanship and traditional art forms. Refurbished doors, windows, columns, and furniture add a dramatic touch to the tropical modern interior.

The décor, finishes, and treatments were thoughtfully chosen with a strong connection to the surrounding environment in mind. Every element reflects the region’s traditions, heritage, or natural landscape, creating a meaningful and cohesive atmosphere. The design decisions were rooted in honouring the locality, ensuring the elements resonate with the spirit and character of the place, fostering a deep sense of authenticity and connection.

Throughout the project, they experimented with various oxide finish colours. The selected palettes, including yellow ochre, olive green, and grey oxides, reflect the local environment. These finishes were carefully crafted by local artisans, further deepening the connection to the region.

The swimming pool walls and central sanctum feature custom cement panels designed to evoke the gentle ripples of water. This unique panelling not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the space but also strengthens the bond between the architecture and the tranquil water, contributing to the serene atmosphere. The design invites visitors to engage with both the visual and tactile elements of the space.

The emotional ties of the clients, the calming natural sounds, the breezy tropical landscape, and vibrant colours create an ideal setting for connection and bonding. This is why they have aptly named this joyful home Villa Prema.
