Set within the leafy precincts of Aparna Palm Meadows on a 7000 sft plot, Villa Reform is a transformative renovation that reimagines a decade-old villa into a contemporary,4890sft light-filled home. While the clients were deeply attached to the gated community they had grown to love, their evolving lifestyle called for larger, more open spaces for their growing children, along with a modern architectural language that could coexist with the essence of the original structure.

The existing home was a ground-plus-one villa organized around two dimly lit living rooms, a dining space, kitchen, four bedrooms, a servant’s quarter and an open terrace above. While the broad programmatic requirements remained largely unchanged, the family envisioned more generous bedrooms with walk-in wardrobes, expansive common areas, and the addition of a multipurpose room.

To accommodate these aspirations, the renovation introduced an additional floor and a newly designed service block housing the servant’s quarters, a storeroom and a wet kitchen. Carefully articulated, the service block reads less like an addition and more like a sculptural feature wall, seamlessly blending into the architectural composition.

At the heart of the original house was a compact internal courtyard. This space became the focal point of the transformation. By removing the enclosing walls and opening up the slab above, the courtyard evolved into a dramatic central volume that visually and spatially connects the entire home. The wall facing the garden was replaced with expansive glazing, strengthening the relationship between indoors and outdoors while allowing natural light to flood deep into the interiors.

Strategic structural interventions were undertaken to enlarge rooms and improve circulation, while key elements along the southern façade and the original sloped roof profile were intentionally preserved—both to maintain structural integrity and to comply with community guidelines.

The reconfigured ground floor unfolds as an open plan, allowing fluid transitions between the formal and informal living areas. A central dining space anchors the layout, opening into a generous kitchen with a breakfast counter that overlooks the courtyard. A well-appointed guest bedroom completes this level. A defining feature of the floor is a series of vertical metal fins that rise across two levels, creating a striking architectural element that visually ties the spaces together while subtly filtering light.

The first floor accommodates a serene pooja room and two expansive bedrooms. The son’s suite includes a study, walk-in wardrobe and a large bathroom, while the daughter’s striking double-height suite features a study corner, walk-in wardrobe and private bathroom. A large cantilevered balcony acts as a buffer between the bedroom and the outdoors, offering shade while framing views of the surrounding landscape.

The newly added top floor serves as a private retreat for the homeowners. It houses a multipurpose lounge, a compact bar, and a double-height master suite. The lounge opens onto an intimate terrace shaded by a floating roof fitted with wooden slats, creating a warm interplay of filtered light and shadow throughout the day.

The existing staircase was retained but refined with a sleek glass railing that enhances the contemporary character of the home. A glass lift was also introduced, ensuring effortless movement across all levels.

The interiors follow a modern contemporary palette defined by clean lines and subtle accents of colour, with each room tailored to its occupant. The son’s bedroom combines black glass and blue velvet tones with a dedicated study unit, while the daughter’s room blends coloured glass and veneer, complemented by a cantilevered study desk and integrated bookshelves. The master suite pairs rich veneers with marble finishes to evoke understated sophistication. Concealed doors in every bedroom discreetly hide the entry to the walk-in wardrobes, maintaining visual continuity.

Arrival at the house is marked by broad entrance steps flanked by a tranquil water body. The L-shaped water feature wraps around the formal living area, lending the space a striking floating quality. On the northern side, the water body transitions into a deck that frames a sculptural stone wall, serving as a dramatic backdrop to a serene Buddha installation.

Providing shade to the entrance, a long cantilevered balcony extends from the daughter’s bedroom above, further protected by a cantilevered pergola that casts ever-changing shadows throughout the day. The façade is finished in bold black leather cladding, lending the home a distinctive and refined architectural identity.

Across all levels, generous openings frame views of the landscaped surroundings, ensuring that every space remains deeply connected to nature. The result is a villa that honours its past while embracing a fresh contemporary expression—light-filled, open, cohesive and inherently warm.
